Alpha Phi Alpha
Founded: December 4, 1906
Alpha Phi Alpha, the first intercollegiate Greek-Letter fraternity established for African-Americans, was founded atCornell University in Ithaca, New York by seven college men who recognized the need for a strong bond of brotherhood among African descendants in this country.
The Fraternity initially served as a study and support group for minority students who faced racial prejudice, both educationally and socially at Cornell. The Seven Founders, affectionately referred to as "The 7 Jewels" succeeded in laying a firm foundation for Alpha Phi Alpha's principles of scholarship, fellowship, good character, and the uplifting of humanity with the vision to stimulate the ambitions of its members; to prepare them for the greatest usefulness in the causes of humanity, freedom and dignity of the individual; to encourage the highest and noblest form of manhood; and to aid down-trodden humanity in its efforts to achieve higher social, economic and intellectual status.
While continuing to stress academic excellence among its members, Alpha also recognized the need to help correct the educational, economic, political, and social injustices faced by African-Americans. Alpha Phi Alpha has long stood at the forefront of the African-American community's fight for civil rights through leaders such as: Adam Clayton Powell Jr., Edward Brooke, Martin Luther King Jr., Thurgood Marshall, Andrew Young, William Gray, and many others. Alpha Phi Alpha develops leaders, promotes brotherhood and academic excellence, while providing service and advocacy for its communities.

Who Is Tau Zeta?
In the fall semester of 2000, Bro. Calvin J. Whitaker called a meeting with those expressing interest in becoming a member of the Fraternity. A small group of young men attended the confidential meeting on September 24, 2000. In attendance, were three members from the fraternity who answered questions pertaining to membership. The Brothers representing the Fraternity were Bro. Allen Truesdale, Bro. Kenyatta Shamburger, and Bro. Sherman Lofton. The interested men communicated to the brothers of the fraternity their desire to become Alpha men. The brothers of the Fraternity communicated to these men that progress was being made in moving the Tau Zeta Chapter at Kennessaw State University (KSU) to Southern Polytechnic State University (SPSU). It was going to be a long process and patient should be exercised; however, they stated that they could not host any activities for the school and the community. During this meeting, the Men of Distinction (MOD) had formed. Originally this group consisted of men who wanted to become brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Since then, the organization has held socials, bake sales, voter registration drives, and community service events in conjunction with the student body of SPSU. In addition to the activities, the group was volunteering for "Hand's On Atlanta" on the weekend. The MOD organization held car wash fundraisers in the heat of the summer in an effort to bring Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc back to Southern Poly.

In April of 2001, after months of hard work and perseverance in pursing the light of ALPHA, several member of MOD were informed that the national office had approved the moving of Tau Zeta Chapter from Kennesaw State University to Southern Polytechnic State University. The Tau Zeta chapter's first Awareness Seminar took place on Monday, August 20, 2001. Tau Zeta was now ready to have it first intake occur during the fall of 2001. What happened next was the beginning of a new era of ALPHADOM for the campus of Southern Polytechnic State University. The chapter received its founding members on November 17, 2001. They are known as I.N.V.I.C.T.U.S.

Several lines crossed the burning sands while the chapter was seated at SPSU. Since its founding in 2001, the chapter seat has been relocated to the campus of Kennesaw State University, where it was finally chartered in 2009.

Since then the young "Tenacious" Tau Zeta chapter has continued to thrive in excellence at Kennesaw State University. This true brotherhood has allowed a common bond to all whom may witness. "Through Manly Deeds, Scholarship, and Love for All Mankind," Tau Zeta shall persist in moving "Onward and Upward toward the Light!"
